When your gums are bleeding (or inflamed), the bleeding stimulates cytokine signaling molecules. These signaling molecules direct the process of bone and gum destruction. Cytokines also stimulate a protein called CRP (C-reactive protein). A high level of CRP is predictive of heart disease, diabetes, and stroke.

In Australia, the National Survey of Adult Oral Health conducted a survey from 2004 to 2006 evaluating activity levels and periodontal health in 751 subjects. The subjects were divided into four groups based on time spent exercising a minimum of 30 minutes five times per week. The study showed as exercise time increased, CRP levels decreased in the periodontitis group, but remained the same level for healthy subjects (without periodontal disease).

Yet another study linking periodontal disease to physical health. Keep those gums healthy by exercising and by frequently visiting your dental professionals!

A few weeks ago, an Orange County patient came to our office and asked me to fix his teeth that he recently chipped. In addition, he was also concerned with the straightness of his other top teeth. After discussing braces and crowns with the patient, he elected to proceed with cosmetic dentistry.

With the patient’s permission- I am very excited to share his progress with all of you. A little cosmetic dentistry can make a huge difference in self perception. Keep in mind the latest photos of his teeth are still in plastic temporary shells. Just imagine what his final porcelain teeth will look like. Doesn’t he look great!

Please check back soon for a future update once everything is permanently cemented.

In April – May 2009, I volunteered to screen Orange County children who lack access to dental care. The screening program is entering its second year and I have been there from the beginning. Here are a few photos of our kids from Costa Mesa and Irvine school districts. To find out where we will be in 2010, please check with the Irvine-Costa Mesa Rotary Club.

Beginning in 2008, there is a state mandate that all children entering grade school be screened for their dental health. Please check with your local school district to find out more information.
